Get pre-order live on your store. New here? Start with the Pre-order overview. By the end, sold-out variants you choose will sell on pre-order with a ship-date message on the product page, in the cart, and at checkout.

In a nutshell

  1. Enable Bloom in your theme
  2. Style the pre-order button and messaging
  3. Set oversell limits and ship dates per variant
  4. Show pre-order info during and after checkout
Before you begin
  • Shopify 2.0 Theme (some 1.0 themes are also compatible)
  • Admin access to edit your theme

Follow the in-app setup guide

The Bloom home page (Apps → Bloom) has a Pre-order tab with a badge that flips to Active once pre-order is live. The Get started card on the Welcome tab lists the three setup steps with a Set up button that deep-links to the right screen.

1. Enable Bloom in your theme

Enabling the Bloom app embed is the only theme change required. The pre-order message auto-injects next to your Add to cart button on every product page.
  1. From Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes.
  2. On your live theme click Customise.
  3. Open the App embeds panel (the puzzle-piece icon in the left sidebar).
  4. Toggle Bloom on.
  5. Click Save.
From inside Bloom, the Theme editor button on the setup guide opens this screen with the Bloom embed pre-activated - just save.
We recommend disabling instant checkout (Shop Pay, Google Pay, and other dynamic checkout buttons on the product page) for pre-order products. Instant checkout skips the cart, so shoppers miss the pre-order line item message and cart messaging that explains what they’re agreeing to.

Product page block

Most themes need nothing more than the app embed. Add the Bloom Product block to your product template only if:
  • The pre-order button flickers or doesn’t appear on your theme.
  • You want per-template, market or locale overrides.
See Add the Bloom Product block.

2. Design & messaging

  1. In Shopify admin, open Apps → Bloom.
  2. Go to Design, then the Pre-order tab.
  3. Work through the sections in the left column - Add to cart, Product page and Cart messages - adjusting text, buttons, colours, borders and spacing.
  4. Check your work in the Preview panel. Switch it between Product page and Cart, and between the Pre-order, Sold out and Add over limit states.
  5. Click Save.
The pre-order message sits below Add to cart by default. Move it in Pre-order settings.
Set your default language on the product page & cart under Apps → Bloom → Content → Pre-order, then click Save.
Tailor messaging on specific templates, locales or markets with the Bloom blocks in your theme customiser. See Tailor template, market or locale.
Pay special attention to the cart language for orders that mix pre-order and in-stock items. Do you deliver everything when the pre-ordered items arrive, or split into two orders? See Split orders.

3. Configure products

Pre-order shows when a variant has pre-order enabled, has an oversell limit greater than zero, and is out of stock.
  1. In Shopify admin, open Apps → Bloom.
  2. Go to Products, then the Pre-order tab.
  3. Load the variants you want: Select Products, Select Collection, or Sold out products for everything currently at zero.
  4. Edit the Apply to all row to set every loaded variant at once, or edit a single product or variant row.
  5. Set oversell limits, messaging, ship dates, and when pre-order should start.
  6. Click Save.
The Status column tells you where each variant stands: Active (selling on pre-order now), Scheduled (start date set, not yet live), Pending, Finished (oversell limit reached) or Draft.
The Release orders tab alongside Configure products is where you release pre-orders once stock lands. See Releasing pre-orders.

4. Show pre-order info during and after checkout

Bloom ships three customer-facing blocks beyond the product page: Where the copy comes from:
  • Banner text on Checkout and Thank you: Apps → Bloom → Content → Pre-order → Checkout banner.
  • Per-line text on Order status: each variant’s Message in cart.
Change a variant’s Message in cart after orders are placed and the order status block updates automatically - see Updating pre-order info on existing orders.

Add blocks to checkout, thankyou & order status

  1. Open the relevant editor in Shopify admin (the setup guide’s Checkout, Thank you and Order status buttons link straight there):
    • Checkout and Thank you: Settings → Checkout → Customize (Shopify Plus).
    • Order status: Settings → Customer accounts → Customize.
  2. Switch to the page, click Add app block, pick the Bloom block. Checkout Block
  3. Click Save.
Bloom does not display on gift card products.
