# Recommendations settings

> Add the Bloom Recommendations block to your Shopify product template, then choose when recommendations show, how the cards lay out and what the heading says.

Recommendations work with the defaults once the block is on your product template. Everything else on this page is optional.

## Add the block

1. From Shopify admin, go to **Online Store → Themes**.
2. On your live theme click **Customise**.
3. Switch the template selector to **Product**.
4. Click **Add block** in the product section and pick **Bloom Recommendations** under *Apps*.
5. Place it directly **below** the buy buttons.
6. Click **Save**.

Set the block's **Preview** to **Sold out with recommendations** to see your curated cards while styling. Shoppers never see the preview.

  Bloom can't detect the block. **Recommendations → Settings** shows a **Setup** banner listing anything Bloom can check - no display situation chosen, nothing curated, or no curated pick able to show.

## Display

In **Recommendations → Settings → Display**, choose when recommendations show:

* **Sold out** - the selected variant is out of stock. On by default.
* **Pre-order fully booked** - the pre-order has reached its oversell limit. On by default.
* **Pre-order open** - the shopper can still pre-order. Off by default, so recommendations don't compete with a sale you can already make.
* **Sold-out recommendations** - keep showing a pick that is itself sold out. Off by default.

Click **Save**.

## Design

In **Recommendations → Design**, set the grid and card layout:

* **Products to show** - the most cards a shopper sees at once, 1-4. Default `2`.
* **Columns** - cards per row, 1-4. Default `1`.
* **Alignment** - where cards sit when there are fewer than the columns. Default **Left**.
* **Card orientation** - **Wide** puts the image beside the title and price. **Tall** puts it above.

## Content

In **Recommendations → Content**:

* **Heading (one alternative)** - default *"Try this instead"*.
* **Heading (several alternatives)** - default *"Try these instead"*.
* **Card content** - replace the card title with a product metafield, or add a subtitle from the product description or a metafield. Enter metafields as `namespace.key`, e.g. `custom.colour`.

  Override either heading per theme or language in the **Bloom Recommendations** block settings in the theme customiser. Leave the block fields blank to use **Content**.
